Android founder's new smartphone teased, lacks corners and bezel
Anyone who follows Android news knows Andy Rubin as the man who founded Android. His startup was acquired by Google, and Android grew into the dominant mobile platform inside a few years. Rubin left Google a while back to pursue other projects, and that somewhen led him to create a smartphone startup called Essential. The company has been toiling in underground since its inception, simply Rubin teased its first phone the other twenty-four hour period. If there was any doubtfulness 2022 was the year of rounded corners, in that location isn't now.
We don't know much more about this mysterious Android telephone today than we did last calendar week. In fact, we've only seen a tiny sliver of it. That sliver was pretty interesting, though. The screen has a rounded corner that'due south snugged right up against the edge of the telephone. It looks like there are merely a few millimeters of bezel around the screen.
This is the top of the phone, where you'd commonly accept an earpiece and camera. I'm non sure how the earpiece could be handled, simply the front end-facing photographic camera might be at the lesser of the phone. Several devices have had very slim bezels on three sides with a larger one on the bottom. I hope that's not what Essential is doing, though. It's boring and not the best look. The ergonomics of a phone are also better with counterbalanced bezels rather than uneven ones.
This bones aesthetic with the rounded corners and narrow bezels is proving to exist popular this year. The LG G6 has it, as does the Galaxy S8. The GS8 also adds a curved panel to further eliminate visible bezel. It's a necessary step — people want bigger screens, but our hands aren't getting any larger. Of grade, this as well makes phones a bit harder to hold without inadvertently touching the screen. Smart palm-rejection technology is a necessity.
I'k really excited nigh how this is shaping up. Eager to get information technology in more people's easily… pic.twitter.com/LRzQCFSKTm

Essential is coming into a crowded field that even some established smartphone makers have had problem competing in. The visitor has just 40-some employees and an undisclosed cache of venture capital. Investors hope that Rubin'south experience with Android will aid Essential stand out from other OEMs. By rumors have pointed to a modular design, which would be risky. Modular phones take been tried several times, and the closest we accept to success is the Moto Z.
We don't know when the mystery phone will be unveiled or how much it will cost. We just know it won't accept corners. Corners are and then 2022.
